Used in Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising campaigns, a negative keyword is a word or phrase for which you don’t want your advertisement to appear in the search results. Mentioning negative keywords in AdWords or other ad networks is important as it enables you to display your ad to a more relevant target audience, reduces bounce rate, therefore, make the campaign optimum.
For example, as an India based SEO firm you may include ‘SEO’ as a negative keyword in your PPC campaign. Reason being, you only want to target people who are specifically looking for SEO services in India. People who are searching for only ‘SEO’ may have a different purpose on mind. Not mentioning such generic search terms as negative keywords makes your PPC campaign less effective while costing more.
